Our Family

We are the Kautzis (that's cow-t-see): Eric, Kelsey, Lila, Faith and Beatrix

Eric and I met in high school and it only took him three years to ask me out (note the sarcasm).  We dated for 2.5 years and were engaged for 15 stupid-long months (don't do it).  We've been married for ten years and we're getting better at it every day.

Lila joined our family December 16, 2009.

She gave us this look a lot.  I think she knew we were clueless.
We started the process to adopt from Ethiopia in June 2011 and joined the waiting list at number 99 in February 2012.  In October of 2012, we found out that the wait for our Ethiopian baby would be twice as long as we had initially planned.  So we prayed and researched and felt our hearts opening to new things.  We realized that if we were committed to being a family for a child without a family, then it was silly for us to be waiting when there were so many children who were waiting because their unique needs (age, medical condition, etc) made them harder to place in families.  So in November of 2012, we began the process to adopt a child with special needs from China concurrently with our Ethiopian adoption.

Then, on December 12, 2012 our plans were re-directed when we were asked to consider the domestic adoption of a Chinese baby girl with Down syndrome!  We took a leap of faith, (which is apt because her name happens to be Faith) said "yes" and prayed our way through an agonizing three month wait in the hopes that she would be our daughter.

On March 27, 2013 our hopes were fulfilled and we brought our new daughter home.
Meeting our girl for the first time.
We finalized her adoption on April 29, 2013 and officially became a family of four!  Click on the "Faith" tab to read the details on our journey to adopt Faith.

Most recently, we welcomed Awesome Kid #3, Beatrix Sonnet!

After over a year of trying to get pregnant, Bea is a long-awaited hope fulfilled.  She was born July 17, 2015 and her name means "Bringer of Joy."  She lives up to that name every day as she brings so much joy to our family simply by being in it!

The journey looks so much different than we thought it would, but it's also been so much more beautiful than we could have imagined.  We're thankful for a God who directs our paths - without Him we wouldn't know where to turn.  Thanks for joining us on our journey!

This Blog

We started this blog when we found out we were pregnant with Lila.  I asked Eric what to call it and he said, without any hesitation, "Make Way for the Awesome Kid."  So that's what I called it.  Recently the words "Make Way" have taken on a new meaning in our lives (read more about that here).

You'll find confessions of a rookie mama, tales of toddlerhood, probably too many stories about poop, our adoption journey, and occasionally a soapbox rant or two.  You will not find DIY projects or recipes because I am just not that domestic (the Husband cooks more of our meals than I do - he's much better at it).  Sorry.  I could try to be, but you'd be disappointed.

The reason I blog is to document moments in our life, to help out-of-town friends and family stay in touch (since we refuse to get Facebook), to share our adoption journey, and to hopefully encourage all the other new (or experienced) moms out there so that you don't feel like you're the only one who doesn't know what in the world she's doing!

Thanks for stopping by!
